Abstract | The document presents a course outline and teacher material for a nine-week high school psychology course. The objective is to introduce students to the psychology of human personality and adjustment and to encourage them to apply what is learned to their own lives. The major thesis is that students must understand themselves in order to understand others. The student introduction includes a course description, notation of required work, and a list of additional activities. The course outline notes necessary background texts, lists goals and objectives, assigns homework, and outlines the content. The nine sections cover psychology, learning, psychoanalysis, frustration and conflict, defense mechanisms, rationalization, human concerns and adjustments, and mental hygiene. Activities emphasize class and group discussion as well as reading, observing situations at home, playing games, keeping a diary, evaluating various behaviors, analyzing situations, and keeping a notebook. Appendix A provides instructions for maintenance of notebooks, the only required assignment. Teacher material includes a list of objectives, an overview, and brief teaching suggestions. Appendix B provides more complete information for teaching methods and instructions. The final two appendices offer three exams and three forms for student evaluation of the course objectives. (CK) |
