Abstract | Responding to the challenge to improve general education, this compilation of ideas, programs, and people is intended to provide information, broaden perspectives about what can be done, and help to highlight strengths and weaknesses of several alternative approaches. The topics included in this guide grew out of the practical needs of faculty members and administrators who are providing leadership for the revision of general education at institutions participating in the Project on General Education Models. After an introduction and a Presentation of general resources, the following chapters are presented: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives (Jerry G. Gaff); Objectives for Students (Jerry G. Gaff); Curricular Approaches (Jerry M. Chance); Non-Curricular Dimensions (John P. Nichols); Teaching and Advising (Judith A. Redivine); Initiating and Implementing Change (Clifton F. Conrad); and Evaluation: Assessment, Judgment and Decision (Michael L. Davis). Most chapters include four sections: (l) a short essay that offers perspectives, draws conclusions, presents key issues, identifies major trends and highlights current controversies; (2) an annotated bibliography; (3) additional bibliographic material; and (4) a list of programs, organizations, and individuals who direct them.
