Abstract | The sounds of Standard Indonesian, or Bahasa Indonesian, used in official government and private communication, are presented here. The place and manner of articulation and the distinctive features of consonants, vowels, diphthongs, and vocalic combinations are thoroughly explained through text, illustrations, and charts. Variants of pronounciation caused by the addition of prefixes and suffixes are pointed out. Special attention is given to the Indonesian A, I, O, U, the written E, the aspirated H, and the glottal stop. Techniques for overcoming difficulties with final B and P, Dj, Tj, and Ng are offered. Other difficulties for the American learner concerning aspiration accent, stress, and pitch are discussed. (PMJ) |
