AbstractThe document addresses past, present, and future issues concerning women througout the world. It is presented in seven chapters. Chapter I discusses women as the invisible "fifth world." The author contends that this fifth world exists, uncounted and unassisted, on every continent. Chapter II traces the role of women throughout history. The chapter emphasizes that the ideas that women belong in the home and that only men are producers are neither universal nor very ancient. It has gained widest acceptance in the Western world and is a result of industrialization and urbanization. Chapter III discusses ancient and modern alternatives and reforms sought by women. Nunneries, crafts guilds, and the beginnings of international movements are discussed. Chapter IV focuses on the present global nature of the women's movement, the evolution of International Women's Year (1975), and the World Plan of Action adopted by the conference in Mexico City. Chapter V presents statistics and realities concerning the present status of women. The author stresses that only ten percent of the world's administrators and managers are women and that women have remained largely absent from the political arena. Chapter VI discusses the future of women in the old world of power. The influences of development on third world women and women's self-help movements are emphasized. The final chapter discusses women's networks and concludes that the ingenuity of women may be the most precious resource the human race has left. (Author/KC)
