Abstract	A four-part study was undertaken at Virginia Western Community College to determine the effectiveness of using the Cooperative English Expression Tests (CEET) and/or high school English grades to place students in English 111 (Eng 111) or Developmental English 01 (Dev Eng 01). During Winter 1976, all students (N=110) enrolled in Dev Eng 01 were tested using the CEET to determine the tests' ability to predict student readiness for Eng 111. During Fall 1976, the relationships of CEET pre- and post-test scores were evaluated in Eng 111 and Dev Eng 01. During Fall 1978, a validated study compared Fall 1977 and 1978 passing rates in Eng 111 for specific score intervals on the CEET, and during Summer 1979, the relationship between high school English grades and CEET scores was determined based on a random sample of 220 students. Study results indicate that students scoring less than 41 on the CEET had less than a 40% chance of receiving a passing grade in Eng 111, whereas students scoring above 45 had a greater than 85% chance. A writing sample for students scoring in the 41-45 range was found to be effective in student placement. As 90% of the students achieving an "A" in English courses in their junior and senior years in high school scored above 45 on the CEET, it was recommended that these students be placed automatically in Eng 111.
