Abstract | This first of three how-to manuals in the Adult Competency Education (ACE) Kit contains a brief introduction, flowchart of the ACE student process, and counseling manual. The manual describes a process integrating counseling and instruction and demonstrating ACE's premise that vocational counseling can provide students the stimulus for understanding their need for basic skills. Material is divided into two parts: the individual process and the group counseling process. The section on individual counseling discusses intake and developing a vocational goal. Length, content, and exercises are suggested and sample forms provided for such steps or sessions as determining employment readiness, assessing basic math and reading levels, measuring vocational interests, reviewing the selected ACE job description, and establishing an instructional and counseling workshop program. The section on group counseling outlines workshop formats, including purpose, rationale, necessary materials, and procedures for four processes: self-assessment, occupational exploration, planning of educational and career ladders for job goals, and preparing for a specific job interview. Specific exercise topics include skills identification, information gathering about jobs, preparing application form and resume, and job interview. A bibliography is provided.
