Abstract	The fourth national inventory of computers in higher education, 1976-77 is presented. The four inventories together provide detailed snapshots of the history of computer utilization by U.S. higher education since 1964. The contents of the publication include a description of the inventory and statistical data on the computer systems, expenditures and sources of support, computer installations by type of usage and responsible officer, and computer sciences and related degree programs. Summary data are presented in six sections concerning: (1) expenditures, sources of income, staff, languages, and types of billing and services; (2) computers (3) instructional and research use by academic area for 1976-77; (4) computer science and related degree programs--staff, majors, and degrees awarded; (5) computer science, data processing, information science, etc. courses by general descriptors; and (6) institutional administration applications. Appendices include forms and instructions. (SW)
