| Abstract | Correctional education faces a great challenge--withstanding the temptation to become complacent while aggressively seeking new directions at a time when it has reached a stage of satisfying and successful growth. In the future, corrections will rely on a contractual model with motivated volunteer clients who know that their participation will enable them to act more responsibly. The ideal program for a juvenile facility will be a three-phase endeavor with an orientation/diagnostic phase; an intermediate phase of academic and skill-building programs, leisure time/health activities, and social interaction opportunities; and a final phase devoted to adjustment and integration into the community. For adults, a desirable system would require the interface of all elements of correctional education, i.e., client behaviors, facilities, climate, staff, finances, hardware/software, and corrections functions.
