Abstract | Client orientation should be an individualized, ongoing process which provides not only information about rehabilitation programs and services but also encourages and ensures the individual's involvement and participation in his or her own program. Ten guidelines to be considered in developing client orientation programs are (1) providing referring agencies with adequate, correct information on the facility's programs and services, (2) encouraging intake visits by clients prior to beginning the program, (3) ensuring that initial interviews establish rapport between client and program coordinator and exchange information to serve as a basis for joint planning, (4) providing the client with a handbook describing facility policies and procedures, (5) arranging "orientation" groups, (6) using audiovisual materials during orientation, (7) involving the client in decision making, (8) considering client advocacy, (9) involving significant others, and (10) conducting exit interviews.
