AbstractVarious aspects of aging in industrially developed and traditional societies are discussed in this monograph and bulletin. The objective of the monograph is to foster consciousness of the link between local and global concerns and of the need for a more humane world order. Discussion focuses on the marginality of older adults in industrialized nations and erosion of the esteemed positions once enjoyed by older people in traditional societies. Reasons for the low social position of the elderly include urbanization, modernization, unemployment, increased consumption, and national security priorities. Reasons why older people should be viewed as social assets include that they have experience and time to make meaningful contributions to social improvement, are spiritual and cultural links between the past and future, and have learned to live in harmony with the earth during years of traditional values and simpler technologies. The bulletin, the second component of the document, includes case studies of older adults, background information on the aging process, an outline of United Nations policies and programs on aging, and membership forms and an overview of Project Aging and World Order. Project goals include conducting research related to aging and world order, preparing educational materials for and about senior citizens, serving as liaison with senior citizen groups, and organizing workshops and educational services related to aging.
