Abstract | Ten major elements in developing a curriculum to prepare students to face future challenges and problems are outlined. One, mastery and understanding of technology, should focus on the use of tools and machines with an emphasis on problems related to technology in our lives. Two, cooperative living skills, can be achieved through classroom meetings, cooperative approaches to learning, and parent effectiveness training. Three, basic survival skills, includes cooking, nutrition, preventive medicine, child rearing, and consumer awareness. The fourth element considers the complexity of career options. Areas five, six, and seven concern skills such as self-directed learning, creative problem solving, decision making, and communication skills. The final three elements focus on present issues-oriented education, moral education and humanistic education. The conclusion is that schools should embark on a long-range planning mission intent upon gradually introducing new ideas and skills systematically. (KC) |
