AbstractThe document contains the narrative portion of a multimedia project tracing the history of Jews in Michigan from the mid 17th to the mid 20th century. The developers intended that the materials be used as the basis of a one-month course of study. Overall objectives of the project were to increase understanding among students from junior high through adult education of how to use primary source documents, recognize the impact of geography on culture, and chronicle the historical development of Jews in Michigan. Specific objectives were to increase student knowledge of how Jews came to Michigan, assimilated and contributed to American cultural life, and developed separate cultural and religious institutions. The document is presented in four sections. Section I introduces the history of the project, outlines goals, and reviews field testing procedures. Section II itemizes major events and influences relating to Jewish immigration to North America and settlement in Michigan from 1761 to 1926. The final two sections present documentary inquiry packets relating to the Jews in Michigan for the periods 1640-1880 (section IV) and 1880-1940 (section V). Each section includes information on how to use primary documents; background; excerpts from documents such as trade petitions, family correspondence, and government publications; and questions. (DB)
