Abstract	The contemporary rural population, comprising one-quarter of the nation's total, is diverse. Hence, no single label can be applied to its inhabitants, its families, or its children. This collection of articles, highlighted with drawings by five year old rural residents, describes adaptations to modern American life made by three types of rural families--the Amish, the migrants, and the Appalachians; discusses the educational, health, housing and religious influences in rural life that shape the family and its children; emphasizes the need for accurate 1980 census reporting to reveal demographic change in the rural population; and takes a broad look at changes experienced by the rural community.
