Abstract | A review by the General Accounting Office (GAO) of the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration's (LEAA) compliance efforts with the mandates of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Act suggests that little progress has been made. GAO recommends that LEAA: (1) catalog the overall Federal efforts to provide a meaningful basis for coordination of juvenile delinquency activities; (2) encourage additional interagency projects dealing with key youth issues; and (3) provide the National Advisory Committee and the Coordinating Council with the direction and resources to carry out their mandated responsibilities. The Office of Management and Budget should monitor LEAA's and examine whether it possesses sufficient authority to fulfill its coordination mandate. (Author) |
