Abstract	This occupational safety and health handbook is designed for use as an educational tool in safety and health training classes for road workers. The first of six major sections, Caution Work Ahead, identifies principles of controlling hazards and discusses how the law can help improve safety and health conditions. Section 2 describes three common safety hazards: traffic; vehicles, equipment, and tools; and fire. Health hazards such as chemicals, noise, weather, and stress are discussed in the third section. The fourth section explores methods for using the union to improve safety and health on the job. Specific topics discussed include the grievance procedure, health and safety committees, labor management committees, and doing research. Section 5, Minimizing the Effects of Hazardous Work, explains emergency medical procedures, detection of long range illness, workers' compensation, disability insurance, and other legal actions. The final section provides a resource list for more information and help on specific problems. A glossary of unusual and technical terms is appended. (LRA)
