Abstract | Approximately 20,000 eighth-and eleventh-grade students in Texas were tested on nine career education objectives; (1) career planning and decision making; (2) occupational information; (3) job acquisition and retention; (4) work attitudes; (5) human relations skills; (6) self evaluation; (7) personal responsibilities; (8) economic factors; and (9) education-career relationship. The same test was administered to both age groups; mastery of the objective category was achieved when the student correctly answered four of the five items covering that objective. Performance was judged to be adequate, less than adequate, or deficient, according to the percentage of students achieving mastery. Greater mastery was expected from the eleventh-grade students. Test results were analyzed according to the total statewide population; the twenty geographic regions of Texas; and a number of student characteristics (ethnic group, sex, family income, and language spoken at home). Type and size of school district, reading materials in the home, homework, television viewing, grades, parental education, educational aspiration, and enrollment in special or compensatory education programs were also studied. (A summary of student performance is presented for each of the analyses made, as well as data gathered from questionnaires administered to students and principals). (GDC) |
