Abstract | A product of years of open admissions teaching, this book explores questions relevant to lower and higher, elite and nonelite, traditional and nontraditional educational settings. The work is committed to learning through dialogue. It poses alienation and mass culture as the key learning problems of students, and develops critical literacy as the foundation for studying any discipline. From a discussion of anti-liberatory forces, the essay goes on to present teaching modes that challenge the social limits of thought and action. Pedagogical theory is examined alongside a political economy of schooling. (Author/MSE) |
