AbstractFive distinct images of the educated person are examined: the well-educated American (representing the Western world), the Indian guru or yogi, the Confucian scholar or Mandarin, the socialist comrade from the People's Republic of China, and the "new human being" (a futuristic view of the holistically educated person). These concepts are discussed in the context of the literature of the various cultures. Implications for the postsecondary education planner are noted: (1) educators and their charges need to be clear about the goals of educational programs; (2) an education based on a monocultural formulation of the past is no longer adequate nor appropriate; (3) education is a process that cannot be contained in a single set or type of institution; (4) to be wholly rather than partially educated means focusing on and attaining many goals, one at a time; and (5) students can be encouraged to pursue lifelong learning goals beyond the emphasis and scope of intellectually-oriented universities.
