AbstractPart of the "What If...Series," this booklet contains readings and activities which will help secondary and adult students learn about how to cast a ballot and acquire the skills necessary to do so. By using the materials, students will learn who may vote; the qualifications required for voting; how voting rights have been expanded by constitutional amendment; federal and state laws and court decisions; when, where, and how to vote either at the polls or by absentee ballot; and where to obtain material on candidates and issues and how to compare different views. The materials are intended to be used in secondary schools and in naturalization and High School Equivalency Programs. The booklets are written at two reading levels -- Set 1 at grade 4,5 and Set 2 at grade 7,8 -- but content activities and paging of both sets are the same. The booklet contains concise reading selections followed by questions which the student is expected to answer in writing. Students fill out forms to change party membership, cast a ballot, and learn to apply for an absentee ballot. Reading and writing skills are emphasized. Optional activities described in the Teacher Guide (SO 012 329) include studying the role of the media in elections, having students publicize an election, and conducting a Candidates' Night.
