AbstractThis teaching guide outlines an 18 week elective course on criminal justice for use in grades 11 or 12. The course consists of five units and is intended to help students learn about law, crime and law enforcement, courts, corrections, and capital punishment. Throughout the course there is extensive participation of law enforcement and other law-related professionals in the classroom. Lawyers, police, juvenile court workers, judges, probation officers, sheriff's officers, a corrections officer, and a parolee make presentations relevant to the unit topics under study. The guide gives a brief description of what the presentation should cover. The course also emphasizes current issues. Both teachers and students are encouraged to bring into class and discuss newspaper clippings which are related to classwork. Students are involved in many other activities as well. These include reading books, viewing filmstrips, playing games, writing research papers on a legal topic, giving written or oral book reports, riding along with the police, visiting a court, and conducting a survey of school crime and violence. There is some emphasis given to Wisconsin law. However, teachers from other states can easily use the guide by substituting material on their own state laws. Print and nonprint resources needed to teach the course are cited. The Appendices, which comprise the major portion of the publication, contain some student worksheets and tests. (Author/RM)
