| Abstract | The suggestopedic technique of second language instruction is sketched. Recent efforts to adopt the technique in parts of the American West are reviewed. The historical precedent of suggestopedia and the interpretation of the technique by two linguists at the 1979 TESOL convention are investigated. Hypnosis is compared to suggestopedia, and "super-learning" is treated in terms of specific exercises that are supposed to help develop the ability to use the mind to its fullest capacity. It is concluded that although suggestopedia is complicated and hard to implement, it nonetheless has some promising aspects which still require more empirical evidence over an extended period of time to establish whether the benefits are worth the effort.
