Abstract | Presented is a paper developed by the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh and which is intended for science education researchers. Two major recommendations for the orientation of research in science education are proposed. The first is that currently espoused goals of science education should be reexamined and, if necessary, redefined. The second calls for science educators to become aware of and translate pertinent research methods, findings, and theories of behavioral scientists into appropriate instructional and research procedures for science education. The paper also applies the two recommendations as operating principles in both the development of instructional materials and in research design, providing an illustration for problem solving in both domains.
