| Abstract | This paper discusses research studies concerning class size and its relation to academic achievement. It also explores whether educational benefits of smaller classes justify the additional cost and whether an optimum class size exists that maximizes educational benefits and cost effectiveness. Following a review of the literature, the paper concludes that an increase in class size does not necessarily lead to a decrease in level of academic achievement. Likewise, a decrease in class size does not guarantee an improvement in the social environment of learning. More important is what the teacher does with the opportunities provided by the size of the class. In the absence of a statistically established basis for an optimum class size, the paper says, decisions regarding this issue are bound by fiscal and curriculum policies and conditions. (Author/LD) |
