| Abstract | Biological sex, social area, task area, and psychological sex were used as independent variables when 72 high school students in speech communication classes rated themselves and other members of small discussion groups. The results for males, females, and composite groups revealed that psychological sex was a more significant discriminating variable than biological sex for dimensions of interpersonal attraction, communication behavior variables, and determining who contributed more to the communication task climate. Participants who indicated that they contributed more to the social climate made more social-emotional positive comments. Similarly, participants who indicated that they contributed more to the task made more task-asking and task-giving comments. Other results showed that androgynous subjects were rated higher on task attraction, contributed more to the discussions, and gave more task-giving, task-asking, and social-emotional positive comments.
