AbstractThe curriculum guide is designed to be used by teachers working with three-to-five year old Yakima children who attend early childhood programs and who will subsequently enter a public school system where most of their teachers, administrators, and classmates will be non-Indian. To lessen the negative effects of possible culture conflict, to help the children acquire the skills needed to participate in the dominant culture, and to promote retention of the value system of the Indian culture are the goals addressed by the curriculum design. The curriculum has been produced by projecting estimates about the world the children will enter, defining the components of the learning process, and determining the criteria for evaluating a successful multiethnic/multicultural program. The guide includes: a philosophy of cultural/ethnic pluralism and essentials of multiethnic/multicultural education; an analysis of the social, physical, emotional, intellectual, and cultural needs of Yakima preschoolers; identification of four competency areas relevant to teachers and students (establishing and maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment, developing physical and intellectual competence, building a positive self-concept, and fostering positive functioning in groups); lists of curriculum print resources for teacher reference; and three curriculum modules which are lessons concerning rocks, children's fears, and a healthy concept of death.
