AbstractThe Alternative Learning Experiences (ALE) Program at Whatcom Community College was designed to provide opportunities for students to pursue educational goals outside the traditional classroom, specifically through the use of learning contracts, advising services, on-the-job training programs, correspondence courses, and competency-based vocational programs. In order to determine the relationship between the outcomes of ALE and the costs of the program, a study was designed which examined course descriptions and activities, student characteristics, student and faculty evaluations, and ALE budget expenditures. During fall 1978, 125 students were engaged in instructional activity; 70% were involved in individual learning contracts accounting for 33% of the effort of the 1.5 full-time equivalent (FTE) faculty in the program. Both faculty and student evaluations indicated that the contracts were valuable and relevant; 88% of the students completed the contracts they initiated in the program. Costs of the ALE program for fall 1978 totaled $13,457. Cost per FTE student was $330.63, a relatively low cost for the type and variety of services provided. Appendices to this report focus on student characteristics, sample learning contracts, interview guides, student and faculty evaluation forms, and the procedure used to calculate FTE and program costs.
