Abstract | This paper discusses WNET-TV's response to an HEW Request for Proposals concerning the development of critical television viewing skills. Two factors that should be considered when planning the implementation of a critical viewing skills curriculum in public education are identified--where and how to fit critical television viewing into the present curriculum, and the relationship of television to the arts curriculum. The demands on students and teachers in making the shift from viewing television as passively and easily absorbed entertainment to viewing it as data for analysis are also discussed. (RAO) |
