| Abstract | Based on findings of the Vocational Training and Placement of the Severely Handicapped Project (VOTAP), the handbook identifies major barriers preventing the severely handicapped from obtaining vocational training and employment, and includes a description of strategies that can be used to surmount these barriers. Initial sections cover use of the handbook; the clustering model for organizing potential employment areas; barriers to training and employment; and tables which identify attitudinal, communicational, environmental, and skills barriers with suggestions to overcome them. The bulk of the document contains 65 tables based on worker trait group information from a survey conducted as part of the VOTAP project. In each table are entries with information on the jobs that handicapped workers are now holding as revealed by the 169 VOTAP survey respondents, selected additional jobs in the same worker trait group, and the barriers that a handicapped person may face in securing training or placement. Among the 65 worker trait groups listed are art work, legal and related work, guidance and counseling, managerial work, and animal care. Also provided are lists of aids and devices, associations and committees, and programs, and a dictionary of occupational titles. (SBH) |
