Abstract	Three methods of teaching--traditional lecture, Socratic, and radical humanist-- are examined as they are used at the college level of instruction. It is argued that these methods are based on teaching theories that differ from one another in terms of assumptions about the teacher-student relationship, the nature of knowledge and truth, the learning process, and the goals of higher education. The question is asked: Are these teaching theories differentially compatible with particular types of colleges and universities? On examination of institutions of higher learning based on parental income of students, evidence is produced that categories of schools, private colleges and universities, public colleges and universities, and two-year colleges, endorse different assumptions about teacher-student ties, knowledge and truth, learning processes, and educational goals. Some exceptions to this pattern are explored. (JD)
