Abstract | The guide presents classroom activities for elementary teachers in the Virgin Islands to use in exploring many facets of the ethnic groups who have settled there. The objective is to increase student awareness and understanding of their own and others' ethnic heritage. The document is divided into two major sections. Section I is the teacher's guide, consisting of 36 lessons. Each lesson states the purpose, behavioral objectives, suggestions for activities, and background information when needed. Topics include geography and landmarks of each island, history and developmental roles of the different ethnic groups, language, folktales, native foods, methods of transportation, costumes and clothing, houses, and contributions by immigrants. Activities such as games, discussion, map-making, crafts, cooking, interviews, and stories are suggested to implement the unit. A bibliography of books, projects, and scholarly literature, two answer keys, and the islands' growth statistics conclude the section. Section II is the student workbook, consisting of 36 spirit duplicating masters designed to facilitate the lessons. They include maps, a time line, line drawings of famous people, recipes, and cutouts for models of modes of transportation and houses. (CK) |
