Abstract	Documents in non-Roman scripts now constitute a sizeable part of world production, and their bibliographic control through Romanization is beset by many problems. Among these are the impossibility to simultaneously satisfy certain functional requirements, the multiplicity of schemes and their inconsistent use, and the susceptibility of the method to errors. New and more effective methods must therefore supplement Romanization. Efforts should be concentrated on revising or creating transliteration standards based on official national schemes where available, and with no regard to phonetic or phonemic features; and designing machine-readable conversion codes for the 10 major scripts to be used exclusively for exchange purposes. International documentation services should use only international conversion standards, while libraries and retrospective bibliographies should use local or national conversion schemes best suited to the sociolinguistic habits of their users, supplemented by listings of documents in non-Roman scripts. Indexing and abstracting services should Romanize only names of authors and titles of source periodicals but not titles of individual articles, and bibliographic data in non-Roman scripts should be provided primarily by the respective national bibliographies, both in camera-ready copy and, if possible, in machine-readable form.
