AbstractA model is described for a postdoctoral program based on the structuralist concept that opportunities must be made available by institutions and understood and experienced by participants. The elements of the model incorporate three aspects of an opportunity structure: opportunity for transition, which depends on the size of the program and the status of participants; opportunity for productivity, which depends on the extensiveness of on-going research, financial support and research services; and opportunity for association, which depends on professional exchanges conducted at and beyond the sponsoring institution. It is suggested that postdoctoral programs based on this model will result in the most immediate increase of minorities and women in leadership positions in educational research and development. The Fellowships in Educational Research Program of Johns Hopkins University is described as a working example of the model. Appendices include a list of standard and some seldom used avenues for recruitment to postdoctoral programs in sociology, especially for recruitment of minority researchers. (Author/SW)
