AbstractAt Coffee High School in Douglas, Georgia, a needs assessment committee recommended the replacement of the traditional nine-month program with a quarter system using longer class sessions and allowing more individual attention. The committee members chose the Better Learning Opportunities for Children (BLOC) Program. Implementation involved organizing committees, planning strategies, planning inservice training, preparing curriculum guides, preparing a master schedule and preregistering students. After a year under the BLOC system, 28.31 percent of the students had gained in achievement scores as compared to a year under the old system in which 15.38 percent gained. Twenty percent more students could be taught under the BLOC system. There was a 2 percent dropout decrease, a 2.57 percent gain in student attendance, an average decrease of student disciplinary actions of 60.5 percent and a 173 percent increase in class time contact per period under the BLOC system. It was felt that the program generated increased interest, ideas and morale in students, and encouraged teachers to innovate in ways that would benefit students. (Author/JM)
