Abstract | Potential differences in the learning abilities of adults and children, how they affect learning, and how to maximize adult education effectiveness are explored. The discussion of the differences and changes in the ability to learn covers such changes as those of physical attributes and mental abilities, as well as the role of both the psychological impediments and assets to learning. Several cognitive growth models have been developed and are reviewed: Knox, Houle, Cawley, and Erikson. Adults can learn effectively and progress from stage to appropriate stage if the necessary supports are provided. Educators need to become more aware of the altered learning horizons opened by cognitive development, corresponding to adult development, in order to be effective with all learners. (Author/LS) |
