AbstractThe Moraine Valley Community College (MVCC) 1978-79 Recruitment Program seeks to increase the pool of students who wish to attend college rather than compete more aggressively for those students who have already decided to participate in higher education. A special adjunct Retention Program has been developed to enhance the entire recruitment process. Both recruiting and retention activities are based on a set of guidelines that stress equality of educational access, availability of accurate information, program manageability, and full involvement of all staff members. Recruiting activities include high school visitations, field trips to bring students to MVCC, and newsletters. In addition, a new "shopping center project" locates college staff and informational displays in target area shopping centers, particularly in low income, racial minority communities. The MVCC Retention Plan involves associate deans, faculty, and students from individual departments in evaluating departmental retention rates and planning corrective strategies. A curricular improvement project is underway and a special effort is being made to advise and counsel students with undecided goals in order to decrease attrition. All the strategies used in the programs, with timetables and specific task assignments are presented in chart and diagrammatic form. (DR)
