AbstractThe office of Services for Returning Students (SRS) at the University of Texas (U.T.) at Austin conducted a follow-up study of men and women students who had visited the office from February 1969 to the end of 1971. The study ascertained the average interval between periods of formal education, the fulfillment of educational goals, and the use of education for a subsequent career. A questionnaire was mailed to a random sample of 368 students who had visited SRS. Respondents included 102 women, 3 men and 2 unidentified respondents. Respondents were 25 to 60 years old. Due to this pattern, the findings relate to women. Findings indicated that (1) women compared to men utilized services approximately at a 3:1 ratio, yet there are twice as many men as women over 25 years old at U.T.; (2) the average educational interruption was 10-14 years; (3) most respondents were married; (4) 60% earned letter grades of between A and B; (5) after leaving U.T. 51% were employed--almost one-fourth did not find employment in their academic area; (6) most carried a part-time course load; (7) 48% had completed their educational goals; (8) financial problems were most frequently indicated as the reason for dropping out of school; and (9) 58% knew about campus placement services, but only 21% used the services. (The survey instrument and results are included.) (CSS)
