AbstractThe result of an interdisciplinary seminar in the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at Yale University, this book reviews patterns of academic power in several nations. The authors are John H. Van de Graaff, Burton R. Clark, Dorotea Furth, Dietrich Goldschmidt, and Donald F. Wheeler. Separate chapters are devoted to the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, France, Sweden, Great Britain, the United States, and Japan. An introductory chapter discusses characteristics of authority structures, levels of organization, policies and policy-making, basic forces in the recent development of higher education, and the organization of the study. A concluding section compares systems of higher education, and addresses the concepts, modes, and perspectives of academic power. Neither the country studies nor the comparative statements attempt to cover all aspects of higher education, but instead concentrate on the major institutional forms that carry higher education over time and the systematic connections that link the forms into state, provincial, and national systems.
