AbstractThese essays reflect experiences during a series of visits paid to schools in eight Canadian provinces during the fall and winter 1975-76. The object of these visits was to explore the nature of the recent changes in students and in the formal institution of education. What is argued is that both morality and rationality require that the primary goal served by school programs be the healthy and successful integration of the individual, as a responsible and self-regulating adult, into the social collectivity; and that pursuit of this goal be open to everyone, and as far as possible facilitated equally for everyone, whatever may be his or her strengths, weaknesses, talents, needs, handicaps, or interests. Also examined are factors that complicate and hamper the achievement of these goals as they are revealed in current practices and trends in Canadian classrooms. The author concludes that educational changes so far accomplished have been more cosmetic than real, and if we try to rest content with half a revolution we shall swing rapidly back to a state of inadequacy that will call into question the whole system of compulsory schooling.
