Abstract	E. Husserl's concept of intentionality provides a conceptual perspective of interpersonal communication that suggests a notion of face-to-face communication called "interaction involvement." Structured along dimensions of awareness and responsiveness, interaction involvement explains interpersonal communication as a transactional relationship involving the elements of self, others, and situations. To test the validity of interaction involvement as a theoretical construct, eighteen questionnaire items were developed to represent the dimensions of awareness and responsiveness, and 326 individuals provided their responses to the items. Overall, the factor analysis of those responses provided reasonable support for the constructs of awareness and responsiveness as dimensions of interaction involvement. In view of this research, interaction involvement appears to be a rather fundamental dimension of interpersonal communication, more abstract yet more pervasive than the concept of communicative competence.
