| Abstract | Analyses of the University of Maryland Counseling Center staff's theoretical orientation were performed, taken both as a whole and individually, and noting the differences among full-time senior staff, part-time staff, and interns. The Therapist Orientation Questionnaire (TOQ) reveals a staff trend toward a "relationship therapy" where the counselor is active, directive, and planful, focusing more on clients' interpersonal behavior than intrapsychic events. Despite a belief in treatment formulation based on psychopathology, their actual orientation tends toward the non-psychoanalytic. Such trends are more applicable to the part-time and associate staff and interns. In contrast, the senior staff appear more psychoanalytically oriented, less active-directive, and less optimistic about the "nature of man." (Author/LJS) |
