AbstractA study was conducted which examined the career planning programs provided by employers for their women employees and by postsecondary education institutions for women employees through community-based (continuing education) programs or cooperative programs between educational institutions and employers. Data were collected during 1977 from responses to two mail survey instruments: one for employers and one for educational institutions. Instrument items were constructed after a literature search and work with consultants experienced in the areas of employee training and career development. Items on the employer instrument asked employers to indicate the career development activities they offer for women employees, to assess those activities they provide, and to describe those they do not offer as either "might be effective,""not feasible," or "not effective." In addition, respondents indicated which administrative arrangements, policies, facilities, and organizational patterns listed on the instrument described their implementation of career development activities for women. Although the data indicate that a variety of career planning activities are provided for employed persons by employers and educational institutions responding to the instruments, activities specifically designed to respond to the concerns of working women are not widely offered (Recommendations for improving career planning programs for women are provided in this report.)
