| Abstract | The emergence and development of symbolic interactionism, and its implications for the study of social phenomena, journalism, and mass communication, are examined in this paper. The introductory section discusses the emergence of symbolic interactionism in the midst of the rapid rise of industrial institutions in the late nineteenth century, points out that it can be taken as a model of American conceptions of communities, and shows how its antecedents may be located in the emergence of the Pragmatist movement and in parallel developments in American sociology. Separate sections are then devoted to the following topics: characteristics of Chicago journalism in the 1890s, which show the close relationship between the emergence of symbolic interactionism and the appearances of new journalistic perspectives; the link between symbolic interactionism and Progressivism; ways in which the American liberals who were the architects of Pragmatism and symbolic interactionism sought ways of releasing individualism from the forces of privilege; a major shift in American sociology, from theoretical discussions to urban research, in the early twentieth century; and reasons for the recent resurgence of interest among social scientists in symbolic interactionism and among historians in the Progressive period.
