AbstractThe papers in this document illustrate the need for educators to recognize the diverse populations they serve. Edmund W. Gordon and Stephanie Shipman discuss the confusion surrounding Aptitude/Treatment/Interaction (ATI) research and the educational equity controversy. They argue for educational programs which more appropriately address the problems of equity and social justice in education. Patricia Albjerg Graham discusses, from an historical and contemporary perspective, the dilemma faced by schools as they seek to adjust to new societal values about the role of women. She argues that if genuine progress toward adjusting schools and schooling to these new social norms is to be made, the selection and retention of more women in leadership roles in education are called for. Edward DeAvila suggests that a diagnostic/prescriptive procedure called PAPI (Program Assessment/Pupil Instruction) can overcome the problems in standardized testing by remaining sensitive to the needs of ethnically and linguistically different children who might be treated within a mainstream setting. Finally, Edgar Epps discusses some of the problems faced by social scientists, practitioners, and policy makers as they seek to adapt the public schools to the needs and demands of increasingly vocal and politically influential racial and ethnic constituencies.
