| Abstract | This book presents the findings of a year-long study of the problem of juvenile violence. The scope of the problem is discussed in terms of arrest data and a review of related surveys, studies, and literature. Factors considered in describing the characteristics of violent delinquents include patterns of delinquency and violence, sex, age, racial factors, family structure, socioeconomic status and social environment, education and learning, psychiatric characteristics, and physical health. Comparisons are made between juvenile violence and adult violence. Official responses to juvenile violence such as police and court processing and the ways in which courts in certain New York and New Jersey counties have dealt with cases of juvenile violence are reported. Various forms of treatment used in dealing with juvenile delinquents are discussed. In addition, strategies for preventing juvenile violence are explored and recommendations for intervention programs are made. Appendices include a summary of data collection, the study research instrument, a sample of the Sellin-Wolfgang Seriousness Scale, and three program models. (Author/EB) |
