AbstractSince 1950 Anson County, North Carolina, has had major contributions to economic development, a source of great concern to residents of the almost entirely rural area. The increased capacity of the Blewitt Falls Dam power output and the county-wide water filtration system (one of only a few in the United States today) are attractive to industry. There has been a huge local effort to bring about economic development through formation of the Anson County Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Commissions and through the work of the Anson County Economic Development Task Force, which has six strategies: expansion of industry; development of community services and quality of life; commercial development; expansion of agricultural enterprises; development of human resources; and possible development of a solar energy research site. The shift in the economic base from farm to industry is evident in occupation and income source statistics as well as the county's leadership structure, which has an increasingly active business and industrial sector. Interviewed in 1977, 19 local leaders like Anson County because of: residents' attitudes towards others; climate and geography; quality of life; and economic aspects. Problem areas they note are economic expansion, improved availability of community services, improvement of education, and improved community relations. (SB)
