| Abstract | The kinds of content areas that mature students in psychological studies and human development select to pursue, given almost limitless free choice, were investigated at Empire State College, New York. One hundred and two programs of study were reviewed during a two-year period. Results indicated that adult students selected traditional course equivalents 50 percent of the time, but that the frequency of these selections was at wide variance with the frequency of offerings across liberal arts colleges. Adult students did not demonstrate interest in natural science orientations in psychology, but did demonstrate a strong interest in applied areas and exceptionally strong interest in social science areas. In addition to traditional social science oriented course titles, psychology and contemporary social problems, humanistic concerns, and topical areas related to personal and social concerns were most selected. Human development students, as opposed to psychology students, revealed a more interdisciplinary choice of subjects within the concentration.
