Abstract | As part of a study of access and admission to higher education in Germany and the United States, a group of papers on medical admissions in various countries was commissioned. The papers presented in this book reveal wide differences in admissions policies and procedures. Barbara Burn examines some of the major issues in a foreword: representation of socioeconomic strata and minorities, foreign student enrollment, access to medical education for women, human and personal qualities in admission, alternate careers for medical applicants, and the role of government. The situations in 10 countries are described in turn by specialists: Australia ( R. R. Andrews); Canada (Barbara M. Ferrier, Ronald G. McAuley, Robin S. Roberts); Denmark (Jorgen Worm-Petersen); France (Pierre Pene and B. Antoine); Federal Republic of Germany (Hans E. Renschler); Italy (Gaetano M. Fara); The Netherlands (N. H. F. W. Wijnen); Sweden (Helmer Larsson); the United Kingdom (A. D. M. Greenfield); and the United States (John Z. Bowers). (MSE) |
