| Abstract | The theory of the coordinated management of meaning (CMM) describes the structural relationship between a conversation as it appears in a verbatim transcript and as it appears in the meaning-system of the participants. The five essential features of CMM theory are: a set of four propositions about the nature of communication and human behavior, a hierarchical model of actors' meanings, structural models of constitutive and regulative rules that respectively integrate the hierarchy and organize meanings into guides for action, differentia for comparing actors' rules, and an account of a logic of conversation produced by the conjoining of actors' rules. The utility of this theory is dual: as a diagnostic tool it facilitates the analysis of conversation, and as a heuristic device it generates empirically testable hypotheses regarding the relationship between rule structure variables and the patterns of conversation that people produce.
