Abstract | This document describes how mature scientists who received their master's or bachelor's degrees between two and fifteen years ago, and who are unemployed, underemployed, or need refresher work, are taking tuition-free courses. The year-long program includes courses in chemical concepts, physical chemistry, food and flavor chemistry, environmental science, industrial toxicology, mathematics for chemists, research, and technical writing. Participants who complete the program are given a certificate of completion and placement assistance for either employment or graduate school. Students were contacted by an intensive advertising campaign which included media talk shows, public service announcements, advertisements in newspapers and in C & E News, mailed brochures to women alumni, posters in public places such as libraries, and personal contact with local industries and local service organizations. Newspaper advertisements were the most productive form of recruitment for mature women students. Selection was based on transcripts, volunteer activities over the last fifteen years, and current vocational interest. (Author/RE) |
