| Abstract | The purpose of the book is to estimate the cost of providing special education and training to different groups of handicapped children and youth, and to compare the costs with ordinary education. Written by authors from Sweden, Czechoslovakia, New Zealand, and the United States, the book provides information on (1) the extent to which a handicapped person can attain independence utilizing the assistance available, (2) the cost of caretaking for an untrained and uneducated handicapped person, (3) the situation of trained and educated handicapped people in the labor market, (4) the cost of providing care for partially or totally dependent persons, (5) the time required for the community to recuperate (through taxes) the extra cost of education for the handicapped, and (6) the relationship between the community-borne cost for education and the subsequent benefits. A final chapter provides cultural comparisons and some conceptual notes. (PHR) |
